Have you been looking for a way to make your Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant talk using TTS (Text to Speech)? With the release of Home Assistant Core 2021.11 it is finally possible to do exactly that. You can have Home Assistant read your notification, tell you the next day’s weather, and so much more, by just plugging some speakers in to the 3.5 mm headphone jack.
A combination of the updated VLC media player Telnet integration and the experimental VLC add-on from the official add-on store make this feature possible. Once you install the add-on, it will guide you through configuring Home Assistant as a media player, which in turn allows you to play local files, or music from the internet, and now also as a target device for TTS.
